Autumn photo ideas

Autumn might be the most photogenic season of all: low sun all day, warm colours, mist in the mornings and long, cosy evenings. Here are 20 ideas for photos to take before winter, and the film looks that suit them.

Why autumn light is so good

In autumn the sun sits lower in the sky, even at midday, so the light stays softer and warmer for more of the day than in summer. Sunsets come at a sociable time, and the evenings draw in early enough that the flash comes out by dinner.

Outdoors

  • Leaves lit from behind by a low sun, glowing like stained glass.
  • A path or avenue of trees, with someone walking down it.
  • A misty morning field or park, before the mist burns off.
  • Kicking through a pile of leaves, caught mid-kick.
  • Long shadows across a lawn in the afternoon.
  • A puddle reflecting an orange tree.
  • Conkers, acorns or apples in someone's hand.

Out and about

  • A market stall piled with pumpkins and squash.
  • Steam rising from a hot drink outside.
  • Wellies, scarves and muddy dogs.
  • The last swim, or the first walk in a coat.
  • A pub garden at golden hour, with blankets on the benches.

Evenings and celebrations

  • Pumpkins carved and lit on a doorstep.
  • Halloween costumes, with the flash on.
  • Sparklers lighting up faces in the dark.
  • Faces lit by a bonfire.
  • A table set for a long Sunday lunch.

Indoors

  • Rain on the window, with a lamp glowing inside.
  • Someone curled up with a book and a blanket.
  • Baking, with flour everywhere.

Films for autumn

Autumn colour is already warm, so choose a film that adds to it gently. Golden brings out honey tones in leaves, Warm 35 suits people and everyday moments, and Fade gives misty mornings a quiet, bleached feel. For bonfires and blue evenings, try Dusk, and for rainy days, Mono 400.

Make it a roll

Load one roll at the start of October and let it fill up slowly over the season, a few frames a weekend. Develop it when the last leaves fall, and you'll have a whole autumn in 24 or 36 prints.
